Computer died last night

Wow, tried to upgrade my memory on my computer last night. Installed it (was a tight fit) and when I turned it on it smelled bad.

No, I had the right 184 pim DRAM, hehe. Not sure what happened. Took the comp to a local store where I have a friend, and yep, the MB is bad. Tried to find the same MB so I could use all my old stuff, the comp is over 3 years old so.... no luck, will try on ebay etc later.

So I had to buy a case, PS, MB, memory, CPU, HD, and video card. Even my uber video card is AGP, now it's all PCI-E.

So $1200 later and a local Fry's store in town I'm almost done installing everything. I didn't need to upgrade that's the sucky part. Won't be buying gold for a longggg time.....

Why not just buy a newer board that will use the equiptment you have?

Unless you are dealing with a name brand comp :banghead:

Did you try setting fire to it? I hear that fixes most problems.

*hands karn some lighter fluid* You will have to find a match, sorry I used my last one on my coworker today.

Hehe, times during unexpected crashes I did want to toast it!

The MB's for sale at Fry's (about 15 AMD and 20 Intel based boards) were all of the more modern varety. 3 years is forever in computers and my CPU is a AMD 2700+ Athalon. Try to find a MB for that besides Ebay or a used/clearance place.

For 1200 dollars you could have made yourself a pretty good NEW computer though :|

Can use the case you have now. Probably plug in the same DVD player and HD.. Course I wish I had bought a better HD myself though when I made myself my new computer. :( :x

I did make a new one. Only used the DVD CD and the floppy drive. Rest was new except the KB, mouse, and monitors.

I'll use the old stuff, get a new MB and try to get the old one up n running too. Maybe give it to Carol, she's using a 5yo laptop now

What is this ancient relic you speak of? I heard they only have the capacity to store 1.44Mb, can you confirm this? =P

:D :D :D
My first excuse is I'm old, a mind boggling 49 as of Tuesday. I remember getting the latest greatest Wing Commander game with like 9 floppies. I knew someone in the early 90's with over 4000 floppies of pirated programs, he didn't know why he did it either. This was back when a floppy was a bit less than a dollar, and a meg of ram was $38, a meg of HD space was a dollar. Sooo.. my new HD at 300 GB is umm $30,000 at old day prices?

Current reason? So fast to back up my UO and UOA macros and other important files. I do have a USB 30 gig HD for other files.

Burning CD's? Wow, I still have 350 LP's in boxes.....
